19th century America wild west songs
revived and 're-oralised'
Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Apaches and
'Sioux' (Lakota). Subject of a number of orally transmitted songs of a
past century. Those oral traditions meant a completely different
approach of how to 'use' songs as templates.
Singers adapted the original idea and transformed them due to their
individual musical and even political understanding, their understanding
of their world.
Then came the moment those songs became written down, a 'right' version
was put down. From that moment those songs were museum pieces to look
and listen at, to study. Because the important component, the transfer
into the context of the world of singer and listeners, got lost.
This site is the experiment to revive the oral paradigma of this music.
Completely new versions of the themes may also be inspiration to other
singers and bands to work on this idea alternatively.
This is designed to be an open platform for more interpretations. If you
have recorded own interpretations of those stories of the west, please
contact me, so it can be featured here.
There is a lot more to be imagined what can be done with the oral
heritage available! (all different approaches included)
Meanwhile it has become listed as a
research and study project at the FUFF university experiment: fuff.org
SOUND FILES
At this point most music listed here are draft recordings by **institut
für universelle zusammenhänge. Traditional Western Songs fragments
originated mainly in 19th century are re-interpretated by transporting
the sung into a contemporary musical context. It is incomplete. There
are a lot more available recordings from the project slumbering in the
archives of ifuz from ca. the 1990s (some are listed here, but not all).
At this moment only some songs are available as mp3. At the time of the
initial project beginning there was another file format standard: ra
(real audio), a format nowadays most audio file players do not even
recognize. One day when I or anybody finds time we will convert more
into mp3 for you. Until then one known way is to open the Real Audio
files with the VLC media player. You may also configure your browser to
open them directly with the VLC media player.
And other musicians are herewith invited to join the experiment, to be
available here as links or listed recordings .
don't know how it made its way here, but I leave it online. nice detail: a running tv in the background emulates the campfire
